Wall Street Journal is s*** other than for finding the dates of earnings reports. The news is never the first and best place to do research. Some journalists are genuine while others try to manipulate you. I look at charts of stocks in the indexes to see price movement and then check their financial statements (balance sheet, income statement and cash flow). Seeing if stocks pays dividends and their yields also helps. You can check the investor section of a companies web sites if they regularly increases dividend and news of what they're doing for future growth. I've been fooled by media commentators in the past into buying or selling when I should have done the opposite. So doing my own research first helps weed out any journalists who are dishonest before reading financial news. I highly recommend investing in some quality software. Meta Stock charting software was the first program I bought. It was definitely a turning point for me. It doesn't give real time charts. Just daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly. Yahoo finace is useful: yahoo.com/ finance . You can look at charts, financial statements and other information of stocks you're interested in. For news I look at Reuters: reuters.com . It's the last and optional stage of my research, not the first. |
