Question: Any advise for a first time investor?

I'm a student with a little extra cash on the side that I would like for it to grow by taking advantage of the stock market. I've been doing a lot of research, particularly Citigroup, and feel incredibly confident that I'll have gains for a long term investment. Before I make any decisions, is there any advise you can give other than using virtual money (I've been practising)? Thanks..
