Question: How can i get personal financial aid?

The financial aid i am looking for is not for me, but for my girlfriend. She works hard but only brings in about 20k a year. She's worked for the same company for the past 8 years but has hit a rough patch financially. Are there any government aids, or maybe welfare that would help. Im helping pay for her gas to give her a break but we need to find a better way without taking a loan out. Again she does work and if it means anything for any type of grant or etc she's 28yrs old.
